In honor of International Women's Day, we highlight some of the world's top female-owned eateries. Some have won, been nominated for, or are semifinalists for James Beard Awards, while others are trailblazing entrepreneurs whose reputation precedes them.

A16 - San Francisco
Shelley Lindgren, co-owner and wine director of SPQR and two craft cocktail bars, is one of the country's most regarded Italian wine experts. Her extensive wine expertise has earned her restaurant's James Beard Foundation accolades for Best Wine Service. A16 pioneered the Bay Area's casual-gourmet pizza mania with its wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas, Lindgren's outstanding collection of Italian wine varietals, and chef Nicolette Manescalchi's rustic Italian cooking. Boulevard

Oakes, the 2001 James Beard Best Chef: California winner, has long been regarded as a pioneer of California cuisine. Gayle Pirie, a San Francisco native and co-author of two cookbooks, regularly modifies North African and Mediterranean cuisine. Pirie and John Clark have garnered several James Beard Foundation nominations for Best Chef: Pacific and Most Outstanding Restaurant. Foreign Cinema remains one of the city's most romantic restaurants, thanks to its vast wine list, high ceilings, and dim lighting.
Frances
Melissa Perello, a semifinalist for the 2016 James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef of the West, named her modest, stylish restaurant Frances after her grandmother. The place is often crowded, but the staff offers 10 counter seats for walk-ins. Californian food is served at this intimate neighborhood eatery. The menu varies daily based on what's fresh and seasonal, with all products acquired from Northern California farmers and local city markets.
